We recently asked Nicholas “Nick” Kryah about some of his favorite Metro Theater Company memories. Nick was MTC’s Resident Artist for four decades. This is what he shared:
So many memories. Here’s one.
Metro Theater Company has done Dennis Foon’s New Kid three times. It’s a very wonderful show that resonates even after 30 years. Carol [North] directed the first production in 2008 with me and Roxane [McWilliams] and Carl Overly and Bobbie Williams in the cast. I remounted it in 2013, and Julia [Flood] put it up again a few years ago. It never goes out of style and part of the joy is the language that Foon has created to put the audience in the same position as the new kid, the foreigner, who doesn’t understand the language and culture of his adopted land.
Here is a picture of me as Mug, the cool bully, and Roxane as Mencha, the pivotal character that the audience relates to. It’s her growing appreciation of the new kid and acknowledgement of her own prejudices that carry the audience on the journey of self-discovery.
