World Theatre Day
Sunday, March 27 is World Theatre Day! The day was created by the International Theatre Institute ITI, the world's largest organization for the performing arts, and was celebrated for the first time on March 27, 1962. One of the most important actions is the circulation of the World Theatre Day message through which, at the invitation of ITI, an artist shares their reflections on the theme of Theatre and a Culture of Peace. The first World Theatre Day International Message was written by Jean Cocteau. Read the 2022 Message by Peter Sellars here.
Metro Theater Company asked its staff two questions about experiencing theater. Here are some of their thoughts.
Why do you go to performing arts events?
To support friends, be inspired, think, cry, or laugh
See something new
Curiosity of something that people are really talking about!
Stay current with what is going on in the field of performing arts
For the catharsis you experience when watching a performance
I want something to open my mind and make me think about my role in the world around me.
It’s been a part of my life since I was little, so my life feels empty without it.
To see how artists can envision emotions through different ways I could never imagine
To feel connected to my community and share in laughter, awe, joy, or heartache with friends and strangers over the course of a single evening
How does going to performing arts events help you achieve something in your life?
It’s our social circle, our chosen family, it connects us to people who lived before, and stories that continue after us. It helps process all the myriad of experiences and feelings both beautiful and traumatic that we navigate as humans.
For a social endeavor—having a shared experience
Encourages me to think abstractly about the world around me
Helps motivate and inspire me to continue to make my own art and to support and participate in the local theater scene
Makes me feel alive
Finding comfort in knowing that people from all over the world have similar experiences and feelings
Consistently reminds me of new ways to see, think, feel, and grow – and gives me the inspiration to discover new things in the world outside the walls of the theater as well!
