In 2016, thousands of students across the St. Louis region experienced the story of the young Muhammad Ali live on stage at the Missouri History Museum. Thanks to special licensing agreements, Metro Theater Company is now able to share this performance again for virtual field trips. If you were among the many educators who joined us in 2016, you remember how powerful this story is. Help your students experience it with on-demand streaming.
The play is 70 minutes long and is best for ages 8 and up. Ticket prices range from $2.50 to $5 per student, depending on the size of the group. All tickets include a virtual lesson plan connected to Missouri curricular standards, along with additional resources to help address the topics of civil rights, racial equity, and social justice. For an additional per-ticket price, a live Q&A session with the actors on select dates can be added. For an additional per-classroom price of $200, a live workshop addressing themes of social studies, history, social justice, and/or civil rights can be added as well.
Live Q&As and workshops are available on a limited booking schedule first-come, first-served.

The Story
And In This Corner: Cassius Clay is the story of the young man who would become Muhammad Ali. From his relationship with a white police officer who introduced him to boxing as a kid in Jim Crow-era Louisville to his gold medal-winning performance in the 1960 Rome Olympics, Cassius holds onto the faith that his potential is unlimited. But it is the friends from his childhood who are becoming Freedom Riders who ultimately challenge him to understand that there is more to life than personal success: he must use his gifts to work for the good of his community.
The play was a hit of the 2015-16 theater season and generated numerous accolades for Metro Theater Company, including the Network for Strong Communities’ prestigious Paulie Award for creating positive change through collaborative nonprofit partnerships. Led by Trigney Morgan as Cassius Clay between the ages of 11 and 20, the play was celebrated by the St. Louis American for its “authentic chemistry among the cast” and its potential to encourage audiences “to channel their inner champion and fight for what’s right.”
Presented by special arrangement with Playscripts, Inc. The streaming production was filmed by HEC Media/Educate.Today during the play’s original February 2016 run at the Missouri History Museum.
