Pearl Cleage, author of the book In My Granny's Garden, has won a lifetime achievement in theatrical writing award from the Dramatists Guild of America! Previous recipients include A.R. Gurney, Paula Vogel, Terrence McNally, Lanford Wilson, Joseph Stein, Horton Foote, August Wilson, Stephen Sondheim, Neil Simon, Edward Albee, and Arthur Miller. You may have seen our recent production of In My Granny's Garden, which was inspired by the book by Pearl Cleage and Zaron Burnett Jr. and illustrated by Radcliffe Bailey.

Rosemary Newcott, Director of Metro Theater Company’s production of In My Granny’s Garden shared, “No one is more deserving of the Dramatists Guild Lifetime Achievement Award. Pearl Cleage’s plays are lyrical and riveting and always explore truths in ways that are both revelatory and entertaining. It has been my great honor to know her and to be present for all of her Alliance world premieres. I have also been blessed to direct some of her work for young audiences… most recently a play based on a delightful picture book, In My Granny’s Garden, penned by Pearl and her husband, Zaron Burnett Jr. Congratulations to Pearl! So well deserved.”
