What are you looking forward to about this summer's camp?
All kinds of creative discovery! My favorite part about camp are the things our campers add to it. Their ideas and interests help drive camp as we learn, play, and create together!
What is something that surprised you about last year's virtual summer camp?
There were so many surprising moments of friendship and joy during camp last year—whether it was campers singing together during their break time, surprise show and tell of camper pets, or siblings and grown ups joining in on freeze dance, there were so many magical moments throughout each week!
Our July camp is called “Living Room Olympics.” If you could compete in any OIympic event, what would it be?
I have always loved watching the gymnastics events—ever since I was a kid. So I think gymnastics!
Karen Bain, MTC Education Director
What are you looking forward to about this summer's camp?
That what our campers come up throughout the week is always wildly creative and delightfully unexpected! The themes that the team has come up with this year invite silliness, collaboration, and imagination!
What is something that surprised you about last year's virtual summer camp?
That campers formed true friendships in a virtual space. Campers and teaching artists built community quickly, and that foundation allowed everyone to be themselves and have a ton of fun!
Our July camp is called “Living Room Olympics.” If you could compete in any OIympic event, what would it be?
Figure skating is my absolute favorite! I am that person who is up on their feet cheering and gasping while watching the Olympics. I took a few figure skating lessons when I was little because I was so in love with the sport, and let’s just say those lessons did not go well. It is such a difficult sport and I am in awe of figure skaters who compete!
Roxane McWilliams, MTC Teaching Artist
What is one of your favorite children’s books?
I love many children's books and one of my favorites is How to Catch a Star by Oliver Jeffers. It is a gentle story about one boy's quest to hold the beauty of a star in his own two hands. The book is also wonderfully illustrated by Jeffers.
What makes you laugh out loud?
Cats make me laugh out loud. They are such quirky animals. They take themselves so seriously and do NOT see the quirks that we do!
Our July camp is called “Living Room Olympics.” If you could compete in any OIympic event, what would it be?
If I could compete in an Olympic sport it might possibly be synchronized swimming. It looks like such fun!
Evann De-Bose, MTC Teaching Artist
What is one of your favorite children’s books?
One of my favorite children's books is Anansi and the Talking Melon. My mother used to read Anansi books to me when I was a little girl and the memories always make me smile.
What makes you laugh out loud?
Screaming goat videos make me laugh out loud.
Our July camp is called “Living Room Olympics.” If you could compete in any OIympic event, what would it be?
I would love to compete in the Olympics as a figure skater. I've never been ice skating, but elegantly gliding on the ice in cute outfits sounds exhilarating!
