Animating Theatre for Young Audiences

Metro Theater Company was honored to be invited to share its experience creating the animated production of Jacked! with practitioners of theater for young audiences (TYA) across the country in a Theatre for Young Audiences/USA webinar, “Animating TYA,” on February 24, 2021.

Amidst the pandemic, TYA organizations like Metro Theater Company are finding unique ways to produce new work and share it virtually. During this webinar, moderated by TYA/USA’s Executive Director Jonathan Shmidt Chapman, teams from MTC’s Jacked!, the Alliance Theatre’s Sit In, and Chicago Children’s Theatre’s Diamond’s Dream shared in a lively conversation. We discussed how animation can be utilized as a tool to bring TYA scripts to life, what it can teach us about new play development, and more.

MTC was represented by Artistic Director Julia Flood, playwright Idris Goodwin, and animator and video editor Michael Tran – three artists who helped bring Jacked! to life.

Registration for this webinar via TYA/USA was open to TYA members and the public, on a sliding scale with an Access for All option. Learn more about TYA/USA and membership. In case you missed the webinar, you may view it here or below.
