A New Co-Commission

From MTC Artistic Administration Coordinator Julia Hogan Laurenson:

”With the 50th Anniversary Season coming to a close, Metro Theater Company Artistic Director Julia Flood and I traveled to Bentonville, AR, for a development workshop of a new co-commission with Trike Theatre and the Arkansas Museum of Fine Arts. Part of the national TYA BIPOC Superhero Project, this new play by Emilio Rodriguez will bring superheroes to MTC stages in the Fall of 2024. Our three theaters came together with a group of very talented actors to read an early draft of the script with Emilio writing new pages for us daily! In addition to discussing and brainstorming amongst ourselves, we visited classrooms of 3rd and 4th graders to share a couple of scenes from the play, inviting their responses to the world Emilio is creating. We also picked their brains about superheroes, superpowers, and the age-old question: Can a villain be saved? Another highlight of the trip was seeing a student matinee of Trike's production, Mariposa/Butterfly, with a fabulous audience of 1st graders.”
