As part of Metro Theater Company’s commitment to build community dialogue around important ideas in its productions, MTC invites you to a Jacked! virtual panel discussion examining the ways in which addiction intersect with the lived experiences of young people in Missouri. The panel features PreventEd Executive Director Nichole Dawsey, Dr. Rachel Winograd from the Missouri Institute of Mental Health, playwright Idris Goodwin, and MTC Artistic Director Julia Flood. MTC Managing Director Joe Gfaller will moderate the discussion.

Julia Flood said, “Jacked! is a fun and engaging twist on the Jack & the Beanstalk story with a score that will make you and your young ones want to get up and dance. But it is also more than that. Experiencing a theatrical performance, whether live or in virtual space, opens us to the work of many artists in different disciplines who come together to create a story that allows us to walk in another's shoes. Through the power of that story, we can address difficult topics together to gain shared understanding. Jacked! provides us with a child's-eye view of the impact addiction can have on a family and a community. We are delighted to bring playwright Idris Goodwin and the MTC team together with experts in the field of addiction and prevention to discuss the issues raised by the play for our young audiences.”

About Jacked!
Jacked! is written by award-winning playwright Idris Goodwin (Ghost, And In This Corner: Cassius Clay) and inspired by the fairytale Jack and the Beanstalk. Developed for children ages 5-11, Jacked! is an allegory that uses the familiar story of Jack and the Beanstalk as a launching point to explore the impact of substance abuse for very young audiences, encouraging a gentle dialogue about its effects on our communities. The production was initially scheduled as an in-person touring production, but due to the pandemic Metro Theater Company reworked it into an imaginative, fully virtual 40-minute experience that combines hand-drawn animation, spoken word poetry, and a fresh, creative hip-hop score.
