Awards and Honors

  • RAC Innovation Fund to honors 2013:  $80,000 award — one of just 9 given to St. Louis arts organizations.
  • “The Giver” named winner of “Best Children’s Theater Production” by St. Louis Riverfront Times “Best of” Awards (2011)
  • Invited to be one of only three St. Louis arts institutions to participate in “New Pathways for the Arts Core Program”, funded by the Regional Arts Commission and the Doris Duke Charitable Foundation and facilitated by EmcArts (2011)
  • “Delilah’s Wish” named winner of the Kevin Kline Award for “Outstanding Production for Young Audiences” (2010)
  • Nominated for 5 Kevin Kline Awards for “Best Theatre for Young Audiences” (2010, 2009, 2008, 2007, 2006)
  • Cited on The Riverfront Times’ “Best of St. Louis” list as one of St. Louis’s best theaters for young audiences (2008, 2007, 2006, 1999)
  • Received FOCUS St. Louis’ “What’s Right with the Region” Award for Creating Quality Educational Opportunities (2006)

  • Carol North honored with Mickey Miners Lifetime Achievement Award by International Performing Arts for Youth (2005)
  • Carol North received inaugural Grand Center Visionary Award for Outstanding Professional Artist (2003)
  • Carol North received Frederick Laas Memorial Award from Missouri Citizens for the Arts (2003)
  • Honored with the “Excellence in the Arts” Award from the Arts and Education Council (1998)
  • Won Missouri Arts Award for Outstanding Artistic Contributions to the State (1997)
  • Carol North received YWCA Women in Leadership Award (1996)
  • Received three national awards for excellence from the American Alliance for Theater and Education (1987, 1981, 1974)
  • Received the Harold Oaks/TYA/USA – acknowledging the significant contributions Metro Theater Company has made in the Theatre for Young Audiences field in the US.  (2014)

Special Invitations:

  • Carol North conducted workshops and lectures in Taiwan on children’s theater (2003)
  • Performed at the Taipei International Children’s Arts Festival in Taiwan (2002)
  • Opened “One Theatre World” Festival, an international event at the Kennedy Center (2000)
  • Toured Japan as only U.S. theater invited to International Festival for Young Audiences (1999)
  • Carol North attended U.S./Netherlands Touring and Exchange Program as an artist/delegate (1997)
  • Performed as only U.S. participant at Stregagatto Festival in Italy (1994)
  • Performed at the Kennedy Center four times (1991, 1988, 1982, 1978)

Prestigious National Funding:

  • Acknowledged for artistic excellence with 29 consecutive years of funding from the National Endowment for the Arts, and with 12 consecutive years of funding from the Shubert Foundation (2011)
  • Awarded $50,000 ARRA Stimulus Grant from the National Endowment for the Arts, one of only two theaters throughout Missouri to be selected for funding (2009)
  • Received $67,000 from the National Endowment for the Arts to establish the New Works / Future Fund, a cash reserve to support new work development (1998)
  • Received two major collaborative grants from the Lila Wallace-Reader’s Digest Fund, one of only eight recipients across the country to be selected for funding (1993, 1992)
